Paver Calculator Guide: How Many Pavers Do I Need?
Calculate paver quantities for patios, paths and rectangular areas, including an allowance for cuts and breakage.
Paver quantity starts with the surface area and the area covered by one paver. After dividing one by the other, add an allowance for cuts, breakage and layout waste. If the supplier sells by pack or pallet, convert the final count into whole purchasing units.
Measure the paved area
Calculate the area that will actually receive pavers. Exclude garden beds, structures and other unpaved sections.
Calculate one-paver coverage
Convert paver dimensions to metres and multiply them to get the area covered by one paver.
Allow for cuts and breakage
Straight layouts may be efficient, while curves, borders and diagonal patterns can create more off-cuts. Use product or installer guidance when available.
Convert the count into packs
If pavers are sold by pack or pallet, divide the required count by the pack quantity and round upward.
Formula
Paver count = area ÷ area of one paver × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100), rounded up.
Worked example
A 6 m × 4 m patio is 24 m². A 400 mm × 400 mm paver covers 0.16 m². With 10% waste, the estimate is 24 ÷ 0.16 × 1.10 = 165 pavers.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing millimetres and metres.
- Forgetting a waste allowance.
- Rounding down the final count.
- Ignoring pack or pallet quantities.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need for a patio?
Calculate patio area, divide by one-paver area, add a waste allowance and round up.
How much paver waste should I allow?
It depends on the layout and cutting requirements. Use product or installer guidance where available.
Should I calculate packs separately?
Yes. Convert the final paver count into whole packs or pallets using the supplier’s quantity.
