Soil Calculator

Estimate how much soil you need for a rectangular planting area, raised bed or garden bed.

Enter your measurements and select Calculate.

How the soil calculation works

Soil volume (m³) = length × width × depth in metres.

Worked example

A 3 m × 1.2 m raised bed is 3.6 m². At 30 cm depth, it needs about 1.08 m³, or 1,080 litres of soil.

Planning note: This calculator is a practical estimate. Check product packaging, supplier information, site conditions and applicable local requirements before ordering materials or starting construction.

Measure a raised garden bed

Measure the internal planting length and width, then the average soil depth. If the bed has different depths, calculate each section separately.

Soil depth and plant needs

Different plants and beds can need different soil depths. Use the depth appropriate to your planting plan rather than a generic number.

Bulk soil versus bagged soil

Bulk soil is commonly sold by cubic metre, while bagged products are usually labelled in litres. Convert the result to the unit used by the supplier.

Allowing for settling

Freshly delivered soil can settle after watering and compaction. The amount of extra material needed depends on the soil blend and installation method.

Common soil-calculation mistakes

Do not confuse the bed height with the actual fill depth if the bed has drainage layers, compost or other materials taking up space.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres are in a cubic metre?

There are 1,000 litres in one cubic metre.

Can I calculate several raised beds?

Yes. Calculate each bed separately and add the volumes.

Does this calculate soil weight?

No. Soil density varies widely with moisture and blend, so volume is the more reliable starting point.
