How to Calculate Paver Base

Learn how to estimate base material volume beneath a simple paved area.

Calculate the base volume

Multiply the paved length by width to get area. Multiply that area by the planned base thickness in metres. The result is cubic metres of base material before allowance.

Example

A 5 m × 4 m area is 20 m². At 10 cm thickness, the base volume is 2.0 m³. With 10% allowance, the planning quantity is 2.2 m³.

Design warning: Base thickness depends on soil, drainage, loading, climate and the paving system. The calculator does not determine the correct pavement design for a site.
