Practical guide

How to Calculate Flooring Quantity

A practical guide to measuring rooms, adding waste and converting a square-metre requirement into whole boxes.

Measure the finished floor area

Measure each room or section separately. Split irregular spaces into rectangles, calculate each rectangle, and add them together.

Choose a waste allowance

Cuts, damaged boards, pattern matching and installation direction affect the allowance. Use the flooring manufacturer's recommendation where available.

Convert area into boxes

If a product covers 2.2 m² per box and your order requirement is 22 m², divide 22 by 2.2 and round up to a whole box.

Keep spare material

Keeping a small amount of the same product and batch can be useful for future repairs, especially when flooring is discontinued or colour batches change.

Planning note: Material calculations are estimates. Product specifications, site conditions and local requirements can change the final quantity.

A practical flooring measurement checklist

Record each room's finished length and width, note any alcoves or areas that will not receive flooring, identify the installation direction, and check the product's coverage per box. This produces a more useful order estimate than using a rough floor-plan dimension.

Irregular rooms and multiple spaces

Split an L-shaped room into rectangles rather than estimating one oversized rectangle. Calculate each section, add the areas and then apply the waste allowance to the combined requirement if the same product and installation pattern will be used.

Why waste varies

Waste is influenced by plank length, room shape, direction of installation, pattern matching, thresholds and the number of small cuts. Follow the flooring manufacturer's guidance where available instead of treating one percentage as universal.

Quick FAQ

Should waste be added before or after converting to boxes?

Add the waste allowance to the square-metre requirement first, then divide by the box coverage and round up to a whole box.

What if two rooms have different layouts?

Calculate them separately when the installation pattern or waste allowance differs. This can produce a more realistic shopping list.
