Practical guide

How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Understand mulch depth, cubic metres, litres and bag quantities before ordering a garden-bed material.

Calculate the garden-bed area

For a rectangular bed, multiply length by width. For irregular beds, break the shape into simple sections.

Choose a finished depth

Enter the depth you want after installation. The correct depth depends on the mulch type and garden use; follow local horticultural or product guidance.

Convert the volume

Multiply area by depth in metres. A result of 0.75 m³ is 750 litres.

Convert bulk volume to bags

If each bag contains 50 litres, divide the total litres by 50 and round up. Check the actual bag label because product sizes vary.

Use the Mulch Calculator for the volume estimate and then compare the result with the supplier's bulk or bagged product information.

Planning note: Material calculations are estimates. Product specifications, site conditions and local requirements can change the final quantity.

Bulk mulch versus bags

Bulk mulch is often quoted in cubic metres, while retail bags are commonly labelled in litres. Convert the calculator result into the unit your supplier uses before comparing prices. Do not assume that every bag contains the same volume.

Measuring an irregular garden bed

For curved or irregular beds, break the shape into rectangles or other simple sections and add the areas. If a section is triangular or circular, calculate that section separately before adding it to the total.

Depth is a planning choice

The calculator does not decide the correct mulch depth for your garden. Different materials and planting situations have different recommendations. Use the finished depth appropriate to the product and local gardening guidance, then calculate the volume.

Quick FAQ

Why did my mulch pile look smaller after installation?

Loose material can settle and compact after spreading and watering. The calculator gives geometric volume, so the real finished depth can change with the material and conditions.

Can I calculate several garden beds together?

Yes. Calculate each bed separately and add the volumes, especially when the beds have different depths.
